Between Currencies

When: July 30-Sept. 11 2010

In Some Math, Jill Gallenstein and Jana Flynn seek a higher order via fractals, Euclidean geometry, and harmonics. Gallenstein's drawings on paper ("Simple Service," "Silent Spring," "The Heist," "Voyage," "Assassination (triptych)") feature dense clusters of intricately detailed forms variously suggestive of "rocket ships, Christmas tree ornaments, [and] grandmother's baked goods" that work as metaphors of cosmic balance and potentiality. Flynn also explores metaphysics with her large, ethereal, geometric solid installations of colored string and other media ("Mutually Joined," "Sightlines: My Longing for a Uniform Mass"), "modern-day religious altars [and] psychedelic monuments." In Between Currencies, ErikParra disrupts consensus reality with wryly humorous collages deconstructing Time-Life magazine photographic source imagery ("Sugar Bowl," "Everything I Learned About Color I Learned in the Suburbs," "Spectral Dispersion," "CactusGarden," "Tasting," "Field Day," "Ticker Tape"). Math/Currenciesruns through September 11 at Johansson Projects (2300 Telegraph St., Oakland). 510-444-9140 or
