Betsayda Machado y La Parranda El Clavo bring their Afro-Venezuelan sound to Ashkenaz

When: Sat., Sept. 2 2017
For thirty years Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo could mainly be found performing in their small village in Venezuela, about seventy miles outside of Caracas. The style in which they perform, Tambor, is a singularly infectious Afro-Venezuelan creation, embracing rhythms and harmonies that pre-date European colonialism and the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The large acoustic ensemble, consisting entirely of vocals and percussion, has only recently begun touring internationally, premiering at New York’s Kennedy Center in January. We are excited to welcome Betsayda to the East Bay’s home for world music and dance.
