.Best yogini/circus aerialist

Laura Camp

You can’t throw a rock around the East Bay without hitting a yoga instructor, but it might be harder to hit one also trained in circus arts. If that combo sounds groovy, check out yogini/circus aerialist Laura Camp and her new studio in Temescal, Flying Yoga Shala. Camp discovered yoga after sustaining a dance injury in the early Nineties; now she mixes hatha yoga with contemporary dance, Russian and Chinese acrobatics, body tension principles found in rock climbing and circus aerials, and the mindfulness of Vipassana meditation. Backing her up are 22 instructors, some of whom she has trained, others who bring their own special skills to the mat (like partner acrobatics or Zumba dance classes, which blend Latin and world music). Trapeze or not, Camp’s classes are worth checking out, and pretty soon you, too, will be floating those poses with the greatest of ease.
