Best Women-Only Workout: Wake up and smell the motivation

Exercise. You know it's good for you, but it's just so damn hard to fit it in. Slogging alone on the treadmill is just so ... boring. The antidote: This four-week women's boot camp led by trainers Anna Gunn and Jennie Votel at Lake Merritt. Cheerful, encouraging, and competent — at 5:30 to 6:30 a.m., no less — the two lead their campers in a variety of activities such as interval training, core work, and stair climbing; each day is different, so it doesn't get old. At $199 to $299 for three to five mornings a week, it's pricier than the gym, but you get a month of camaraderie and some pretty dramatic results: Testimonials range from one to three inches lost around the waist and five to twelve pounds shed by the time graduation rolls around, depending on your effort, of course. The best part? You've had your exercise for the day before most people have had their coffee.
