Best Voter Guide for the Techno Set

The Guild of Oakland Space Cat Voters

They are glossy, brightly colored handbills on thick card-stock. The palette is almost gaudy: a loud mélange of astral swirls and bold text, clamoring for attention, with tiny, smiley, emoji-style cat faces generously appended to each line. They look just like rave flyers you'd expect to find littering the ground as you leave a music festival. But rather than parties, they promote political candidates. They're a public service of the Guild of Oakland Space Cat Voters, a loose crew of civic-minded underground techno lifers in the East Bay who compile the progressive voter guides come election season. In the June primaries, the Guild endorsed Pamela Price for district attorney with a row of heart-eye cat emojis. Alameda County Sheriff? "WRITE IN 'NO CONFIDENCE.'" This fall, look out for Guild street actions involving a cat-headed jumpsuit squad and a sound truck.
