Best View

Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension

It has often been said that the best views of San Francisco (and thus, arguably, the best views in the world) can be had from right here in the East Bay -- and if there's anything that can make a spectacular view even better, it's checking out that rapturous vista with a plate of fried calamari in one hand and a glass of retsina in the other. While Aegean edibles are among the main attractions of this cathedral's lively annual festival, you don't have to wait that long to enjoy the view. You don't have to develop a strong attachment to Saint Helen and Saint Constantine and attend services, either. Just cast your gaze westward and be glad you're in Oakland. That's a form of spirituality in itself.
