Best Vegan Burger

No No Burger

The No No burger defies vegetarian and vegan stereotypes. These burgers are huge and messy. The patties do not crumble and fall apart. And even though they are made from organic soy protein, they're so hearty and robust that even the staunchest meat-eater could be fooled. The patties and the secret sauce are house-made and the burger's fixins — lettuce, tomato, raw and caramelized onion, sautéed mushrooms, and Anaheim chilies — are locally sourced. If you want vegan cheese, No No's got it, but it also has regular ol' Swiss, cheddar, and blue, too. Wash down your burger with root beer and top your meal off with a side of hand-cut regular or sweet potato fries. The only downsides to No No Burger are that it's cash-only and doesn't have a permanent storefront. Instead, you'll find it in a food truck or farmers' market tent, or at other special events around the East Bay. According to its website, No No plans on opening a permanent location in Oakland by the end of this year, so keep an eye out.

(Sorry, no information is currently available for other years in this same award category.)
