Fernseed

Fernseed owner Kristine Dang went from corporate worker to refab queen who turns other peoples’ discards — broken tables, empty tequila bottles, dressers with missing parts — into something you’d want to show off in your living room. The Dimond district store is literally moving into her house this month, which will be staged with indoor and outdoor furniture, artwork, and plants (her succulent terraniums are very popular) — all for sale to the public. She plans on having open houses two weekends a month beginning July 17, and by appointment. Her goal is to save stuff from being dumped in the landfill. She also uses donated paint, scrap fabrics, and eco-friendly materials. Her web site’s blog shows off her and other local artists’ reclamations on an almost daily basis. In a world where things are thrown away so easily, Dang’s mission is infectious and she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty — she does a lot of the hard work of refurbishing and painting herself. Being stylish while saving the earth has never been easier; get yourself an original Dang before it’s gone.
