Best Upcycle Resource

Urban Ore Ecopark

Say you want a new coffee table, but you wouldn't be caught dead at IKEA. You would much prefer something more interesting, like a vintage trunk. Or maybe you need a summer project and want to tack some legs onto an old door. You belong at Urban Ore Ecopark. When you go, chances are you won't find what you were looking for. But you'll leave with about ten things you never could have imagined you wanted. The massive warehouse and salvage yard has two sections: the indoor general store and the building materials exchange (BMX for short) outside. Inside, you'll find everything from old family photos to wooden theater sets to broken down jukeboxes. In the yard, you've got doors, lumber, bathtubs, and more. Inside and out, it's easy to get lost in the sprawling, serpentine rows of recycled goods. You'll also spend a fraction of what you'd spend at the Alameda Antiques Fair, and you get to feel good about upcycling, too.

(Sorry, no information is currently available for other years in this same award category.)
