.Best Stylist to Pimp Your Dreads

Wendy Allen

People in the know say that anyone can have dreads, but DIY ‘locks take patience — we could be talking years, depending on ones hair consistency. Who has that kind of time? Take your head over to Emeryville’s Remedy Salon, ask for Wendy Allen, a 25-year hairstyling veteran, and in about three hours you’ll be out on the street with a full set of well-formed happy nappies. Allen’s specialties are dread perms and synthetic dreadlocks; she’s been a student of the Hairpolice in Minneapolis, the ‘lock czars who developed the dread perm technique in 1986 in which the stylist (back)combs the client’s hair into dreadlock shapes, then treats it with a chemical solution. Also in her favor: In her spare time, Allen performs and teaches with FatChanceBellyDance, an American tribal-style belly-dance troupe based in San Francisco. Look, if you’re gonna go for a dread perm — and it’s not cheap — who better than a belly-dancing goddess to do it for you?
