Smart bicyclists don't bike simply for the fun of it — they bike for the food. So Europa, a sprawling deli and sandwich shop, has become a regular stop for many members of the bike-setting crowd, as evidenced by the herds of trusty steeds of steel lined up out front on hospitable, two-wheel friendly weekends. This Reuben sammie is one you'll remember: It's big enough to feed the breakaway pack, but as an elite athlete who just finished huffing around the Three Bears, you deserve your own. Hot hunks of just-carved corned beef are layered on soft rye bread with a generous portion of Swiss cheese and tart sauerkraut spilling from the edges of the bread that's been lightly painted with a sweet Thousand Island-esque dressing. It's cut in half for easier handling, thankfully. Don't miss the homemade pickles on the condiment stand. Good thing you're wearing Spandex because your stomach is about to expand considerably. This is just the fuel you need for the rest of your ride back to Oakland. But we usually wimp out and take BART, since once we've had this sandwich, our work is done.
