Best Reason to Visit Oakland

The Oakland Zoo

Sure, there are zillions of good reasons to visit Oakland: the beautiful nighttime lights around Lake Merritt, the fantastic grocery shops in Chinatown, the diverse selection of restaurants and dance clubs, the endlessly entertaining rounds of political bickering. But 400 of the best reasons to visit Oakland live at the Oakland Zoo in Knowland Park, including your friends the Burmese python, the meerkat, the kookaburra, the wallaroo, the Malayan sun bear, the rock hyrax, and the bearded dragon. The zoo also has a great lineup of special events in the works for the fall season, including a "Breakfast with the Beasts" on Sept. 22, a celebration of Jane Goodall Day on Oct. 6, and "Boo at the Zoo," the traditional trick-or-treat and scavenger hunt through the grounds on Oct. 28.
