The Great Wall of Oakland

If any city can find a use for a ten-story brick wall hulking above a downtown parking lot, it’s Oakland. Take that as a compliment. Oakland’s first-Friday Art Murmur hasn’t been the same since the introduction of the 100-foot-by-100-foot Great Wall of Oakland, a creative reuse of unused urban space if ever there was one. Over the past three years it’s been employed for a variety of artistic purposes, from projecting movies and short video clips and housing interactive light displays to serving as a vertical platform for fearless suspended dancers. Recognizing the wall’s place as a permanent fixture on the ever-blossoming Oakland arts scene, several local artists took paintbrushes to the wall in April of this year, branding it for all to see in block letters against a neutral backdrop and above a colorful graffiti mural.
