Local comedian Emily Heller does a bit about male “hags.” The joke is that, sure, it’s socially acceptable for a hetero woman to hang with a gaggle of gay men, but you’d never expect to see a straight man trailing a group of lesbians. Mostly true. Except at the (relatively) new twice-monthly dance party, Ships in tha Night. Though it’s billed as a “radical queer” event, Ships appeals to a wide variety of people — including, yes, straight men. The recent Pride edition featured guest DJ J. Boogie, rappers Aima the Dreamer and Raw G, Fiona Simone, and Purple Rhinestone Eagle. And that’s not to mention the all-star lineup of DJs: Black, Durt, Maren, Allette, Andre, G Star, Macio, Lady Ryan, Olga T, and special guests. Clearly, there are enough of them to cover a wide swath of the pop music ecosystem. And that’s not to mention that each Ships event benefits a different set of nonprofit organizations. Now that’s radical.
