.Best Queen of Connections

Michele Seville

She’s been a graphic artist, festival planner, paralegal, and park ranger, but since 2006, Michele Seville has been Richmond’s Arts & Culture Manager. Adopting the classic dictum “each one teach one,” she exemplifies building community through the arts. Art is both “healing and transformative,” she believes, and she’s seen the results in Richmond through programs like mini-grants for public art, in which young and emerging artists in art forms from spoken word to murals are given a year to create their community-centered projects. (An exhibit showcasing the results from the 2017-18 cycle will enhance the city hall lobby this fall.) Seville has also carefully developed an information distribution list designed to connect artists from around the East Bay with each other as well as with art lovers and audiences. But if you talk to those in her ever-expanding circle, what you hear most is: “She cares.” She really does.
