Best Place to Prep for Burning Man

Stagecraft Studios

Those heading out to the Burning Man Festival, the anti-Burning Man Festival, the Burning Man decompression party, or any other variation should consider getting dolled up for the event at Stagecraft Studios, a 75-year-old costume, lighting, and makeup store. Though it's the wide variety of boas, wigs, glitter, false eyelashes, body paint, and theatrical makeup that draws the artsy desert crowd in droves, the store's roots are in theater. The original owners, affectionately known as Mr. and Mrs. A, began sewing their own costumes, and the current owner, Tom Maxwell, is himself a thespian. The result is a costume for any persona you could covet: cancan dancers, mermaids, witches, and wenches for the gals; jesters, judges, Trekkies, and leprechauns for the guys. If Stagecraft doesn't have the costume of your dreams, they can order it for you. The sheer quantity and variety of costumes also make it a prime target for the Halloween hordes. Shop employees advise shopping early and say the first Halloween revelers show up as early as June, which means you can get your Burning Man and Halloween outfits in one fell swoop.
