.Best Place to Get an Offbeat Wedding Gift

The Bone Room: A Natural History Salon

If you know a nature-loving couple getting married and want a gift that goes way beyond anything you’ll find at Macy’s, you can’t get more radical and offbeat than The Bone Room. The Berkeley store, now located on Solano Avenue, has been a hot spot for collectors of bones and fossils (both genuine and replicas), mounted insects, and other remains of “things once living” since owner Ron Cauble opened it in 1987. You can also buy seashells and other animal remnants such as claws, horns, skin, and shells. You can even buy Mexican Jumping Beans. As far as actual wedding gifts go, try one of the mounted displays of iridescent butterflies, known as “sweeps,” which are truly enchanting. Or you can give the bride and groom an emu egg for their living room mantle. You can also buy insects mounted in amber, Lucite, or simply and tastefully framed. For the really daring, outré gift, consider an inlaid, Tibetan, decorated human skull. Those concerned about cruelty needn’t worry. No animals (including human) were harmed in order to provide their remains to the store and none are from federally listed endangered species.
