.Best Place to Buy Gifts of Jewelry (for Yourself)

Philippa Roberts

There’s no better spot in the East Bay for a woman in need of a bit of spoiling to douse herself than the retail sanctuary that is Philippa Roberts. Whether you’re celebrating your birthday or marking another significant event (“I gave myself a jewelry budget equal to the cost of filing for my divorce!” a shopper gleefully informed the sales clerk during a recent visit), this jewelry and charming-gifty-things boutique was made for those times when you crave something unique, something to love, something that speaks to you. (And, face it — sometimes you simply can’t depend on someone else to give it to you.) The store, where prices mostly fall in the $50-$250 range — is named after the jewelry designer, who proffers a vast selection of her own simple and lovely silver, gold, and semi-precious gemstone pieces. (Roberts’ studio is at the back of the shop, and it’s there that she and her team craft designs for more than two hundred specialty stores around the country, including the San Francisco MOMA and the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.) The shop also features a wide range of other jewelry designers, many of them local, and after a languid hour mulling over your options, it’s impossible not to walk away satisfied … if just a tad bit broker. But don’t you deserve it?
