Arbor Cafe in Temescal was designed for communing, both with your computer and your fellow neighbor. It’s a large and laid-back space — most of the tables are big enough to accommodate study groups and knitting clubs, though in reality they’re often populated by singles taking advantage of the free wi-fi, making the situation ideal for a stranger to sidle up, MacBook in hand, for a read and perhaps a peep at your Macbook. “What’re you reading?” is a relatively safe opener. The beer and wine menu provides any required courage, and ping-pong tourneys and open mics can be occasional ice-breakers. Sit on the sofas if you’re truly searching — it’s impossible to escape a conversation there.
