La Farine

While Americans torture themselves with restrictive diets and excessive exercise, the French do it the right way: with gallons of wine, ultra-rich foods, and cigarettes. (They also allegedly love Jerry Lewis, but three out of four ain't bad.) And guess what? They're healthier and live longer than Americans. The perfect place to get in touch with the French lifestyle is La Farine, the name being French for "flour." This bakery isn't stingy with the sucre or beurre either. Take the Swiss Twinkie, a puff pastry stuffed with nut purée and topped with cinnamon sugar. Or sample a few sacristains, flaky twists filled with pecans and dusted with powdered sugar. But the ultimate Farine delicacy is the Morning Bun: croissant dough rolled thin, spread with brown sugar and cinnamon, and rolled into a log, then cut and baked in muffin pans. The caramelized sugar that hardens on the bottom of the bun is the best and should be saved for last. After that, have a cigarette, and dream of Paris.
