Best Newspaper

East Bay Times

The hedge fund owners of the East Bay Times have done just about everything possible to undermine the newspaper's viability. They've repeatedly laid off talented staff, retired the storied Oakland Tribune masthead, sucked money out of the news organization to gamble in financial markets, and they've done little to reinvest in the guts of the organization. But despite all of this, the reporters, editors, photographers, and other workers at our region's daily continue showing up to work, asking tough questions, and chronicling the sometimes obscure, but always vital stories of local government, cops, crime, courts, business, and more. And in the meantime, they've won a Pulitzer Prize. Although we'd love to tell you that the Express is the best newspaper in the East Bay, it's simply not true. There's nothing around that can fill the void that would be left if the East Bay Times were to disappear.
