Best Neighborhood Thrift Shop

Temescal Community Foundation

From the outside, the inviting pink house on Telegraph Avenue looks like it hasn't changed in years. With the iconic Hooper's Chocolates sign standing tall outside, it'd be easy to mistakenly assume the old-fashioned chocolatier is actually still in business. While there are sadly no more sweets inside, the cottage is now home to a different kind of treat. The Temescal Community Foundation, a nonprofit group formed in January, now runs an antiques and thrift shop inside the historic house — and it's much more interesting than your typical consignment store. The organization is made up of a group of local residents, and profits from the store go toward supporting people who are disabled and disenfranchised. So a visit to the shop is a chance to not only donate to a great cause while exploring a landmark site — the vintage candy display counters are still intact — it's also an opportunity to score classic thrift store goodies and high-quality antiques.

(Sorry, no information is currently available for other years in this same award category.)
