Best Mud Pie

Caffe Venezia

Despite its origins in North Beach of half a century ago, mud pie is getting awfully hard to find in the greater Bay Area, which is a pity because mud pie is the most satisfying dessert ever conceived by humankind. This lusty slab of heaven combines three items that are already delightful on their own merits — mocha ice cream, chocolate cookies, and fudge — into one almost unspeakably rapturous coalescence. Caffe Venezia, a family-friendly bastion of fresh, inventive Northern Italian cookery, prepares an excellent mud pie with delectable Old World overtones. Their torta gelato piles an abondanza of high-octane espresso ice cream on a luscious crust of crushed chocolate cookies bound with rich, dense cream cheese. The pie's crowning glory is the thick, dark endorphin-rich fudge that runs down its sides and mingles with all that melting ice cream. A big handful of toasted almonds and a good half-gallon of cloudlike whipped cream crowns this dreamy, endangered dessert.
