Best Minister, Rabbi, or Imam: Muslim leader with the biggest heart

Mohammed Rajabally

Mohamad Rajabally has to be one of the most community-minded Muslim leaders around. He's president of Fremont's Islamic Society of East Bay, which attracts about eight hundred worshippers to a typical Friday afternoon prayer. Not only is he well versed in the Koran, and happy to share with you his spiritual travels to Mecca, but he's an educated and enlightened activist -- a big-hearted alternative to the radical imams. During the day, the Mauritius-born 55-year-old runs a dental practice in Fremont. But on breaks, you might catch the bearded Rajabally at a meeting at the Fremont Library to discuss the problems of elderly immigrants, at a peace rally in Oakland to encourage Muslims not to sell alcohol, or helping out with the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused, a haven for battered women he cofounded in 2002.
