.Best Master of Mosaics

Daud Abdullah

When is a trash can not a trash can? When it becomes a piece of street art, courtesy of mosaic master Daud Abdullah, with the help of his many students and community volunteers. Abdullah, whose Facebook page cites his education as both New York’s School of Visual Arts and “School of Hard Knocks” in Arizona, refers to his transformed civic waste receptacles as “treasure boxes.” Since moving to Richmond from Oakland in 2013, he’s received a grant to work on 300 of them, which can now be seen throughout the city, all depicting positive messages and images, including a mosaic version of Rosie the Riveter. Abdullah teaches mosaic work to high school students through his “Treasure Box Academy” and free community workshops periodically in parks throughout Richmond. He also offers classes in mosaic through the Richmond Art Center. Oh, and he’s also a professional electrician. He certainly helps brighten cityscapes.
