Best Local T-Shirt Makers

The Girl and Rhino

Subtle but clever and wry humor rule Adam Boroian's T-shirt line, the Girl and Rhino. The image that launched the collection is a crane at the Port of Oakland dreaming about life as a Star Wars AT-AT Walker, but bird humor, politics, knock-knock jokes, and whatever else (bikes and pipes, for instance) make their way into the Girl and Rhino designs. Pigeons puzzle over life as flying rats, blackbirds contemplate Hitchcock screen tests, and Polly the parrot wants the f*@# out of the cage. Meanwhile, T-shirt fans can get on the presidential bandwagon with an Obama PILF proclamation. The name for the line comes from a poignant, hopeful tale that Boroian, who credits B. Kliban, James Thurber, and Edward Gorey as major influences, wrote about a sad little girl who was without friends until she meets in her attic a rhino that lives off the crumbs of her cookies and cakes and makes her laugh. You can find his T-shirts, hoodies, onesies, and infant tees online and at local farmers' markets, so keep an eye out.
