Best Literary Arts Zealots:A heady nonprofit

Neighbor Lady Community Arts Project

Let's face it: It's hard to be a nonprofit, much less one focused on the literary arts, in this ever-so-commercial world. But Neighbor Lady Community Arts Project of Oakland is committed to giving it a whirl. Founded in 2005 by the same rabble-rousers who started the soon-to-be-defunct Kitchen Sink Magazine (they still need $2,000 to get the last issue out, if you'd like to make a donation) the project has also established a quarterly Telegraph Stories reading and music series at such venues as the Stork Club and Mama Buzz Gallery. The group hopes to create publishing programs that will promote local writers and artists (Kitchen Sink anthology, anyone?) community music performances, local art exhibitions, and maybe even a press of its own. Remember that sweet little ol' neighbor lady in your hometown, wherever it was? Well, she's been reincarnated in Oakland, and she loves the written word.
(Sorry, no information is currently available for other years in this same award category.)
