.Best Jukebox

George Kayes

The jukebox at George Kaye’s (4044 Broadway, Oakland) may not be as good as those at the Ruby Room or the Mallard, but when you put your money in, you can expect to hear your songs within ten minutes, unlike them other places. Small, smoky n’ cute, Geo Kaye’s has an eclectic mix of regulars and down-to-earth hipsters who all end up chatting toward the end of the night when the booze has set in and the walls seem smaller and more intimate. The jukebox hasn’t been updated in a few years (do we really need to hear a cut from Mazzy Star’s My Swan after a few?), but it’s stocked with local comps and bands like the Thumb of the Maid (the Moore Bros’ band). The Clash’s first one is on there, the Ramones, the Jam, some Twin Tone collections, and even the Upper Crust. Dang. But the best thing is being able to play “Gigantic” by the Pixies three times in a row.
