Most bike shops do just two things: sales and service. That’s fine, but it’s not how Richmond Spokes rolls. Instead, the Richmond nonprofit serves what you might call a higher calling: social justice, youth training, and entrepreneurship. Its activities as a full-service bike shop are filtered through this perspective: Youth participants not only work directly with customers (under the guidance of adult staff), but are encouraged and empowered to design, plan, market, and execute their own ideas. The organization also advocates for and educates around sustainability, community greening, and self-sufficiency; hosts group rides; and provides valet bike parking at public events throughout the East Bay. Even other bike co-ops may find themselves inspired by Richmond Spokes’ broad vision. Is there anything a bicycle can’t do?
