Forget the food truck qualification; the burgers Roland Robles is slinging from his Oakland-based burgermobile are some of the best in the Bay Area, bar none. At Fivetenburger, well-executed simplicity is the name of the game. Too often restaurants get so carried away with fancy toppings (cave-aged blue cheese! truffles! caviar!) that they lose sight of their burger basics: patty, bun, and only a judicious use of accoutrements that’ll enhance — not overwhelm — the main attractions. Fivetenburger offers some fancy upgrades, like a grass-fed version available for a modest $2 upcharge, but we’ve never been disappointed with the basic $6.75 “loaded” burger. First and foremost, the beef patty is well seasoned and cooked perfectly to order (medium-rare, please!) each and every time. And all the other components — the toasted bun, the homemade pickles, the restrained application of ketchup, mayo, and mustard — are just right. Eat your burger standing up: Trust us, it tastes even better that way.
