Cutting through the cultural thicket of inauthentic reblogged Tumblr posts and ceaselessly banal, half-hearted Twitter commentary stands Degenerate, a locally produced, punk-influenced fanzine. Produced by writer and musician Sam Lefebvre, the ‘zine conjures Situationist-style analysis alongside thoughtful musical insights that short-circuit the lowly standards of current music criticism without falling victim to any level of pretentiousness. Now in its tenth issue, Degenerate is a tabloid-size publication with a meticulously styled black-and-white aesthetic that stages a de facto insurrection within the reader’s thoughts in ways that Instagram simply cannot. And with the most recent release containing a rare interview with Michael Gira (Swans), a thought experiment with Meredith Graves (Shoppers), and various perceptive album reviews, its going rate of three dollars is practically a steal.
