.Best CSA with Love and Honey

Urban Tilth

Picture this: A herd of little kids on bikes heading to an urban farm to help weed and mulch. By now, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs are ubiquitous. But few are as truly community-based and “back to the land” as Urban Tilth. Its 11 small farms and gardens in North Richmond and Richmond itself are transforming industrial areas that have been food deserts for decades. Volunteer days turn out scads of folks from all over the city to sites such as the Roots and Restoration Farm, Urban Tilth’s biggest project yet, and their three tiers of CSA boxes include one aimed at people below the poverty line, as well as one called “Pay It Forward,” which helps subsidize the low-income tier. All produce is organically grown and tended with plenty of love, and as of recently, subscribers can add home-hived honey to their orders. Memberships are limited — but well worth the wait.
