Alameda Point Community Garden Co-op

If you're looking for a community garden that's bigger than mere spaces on the ground, check out the Alameda Point Community Garden Co-op. Founded by a nonprofit collective that works to end homelessness, the group uses vacated property on the former Alameda Naval Air Station to provide housing and job training to hundreds of homeless East Bay residents. The garden itself is managed and maintained by the Growing Youth Project, a group of young people from the community who tend areas around the garden beds, farm the peripheral areas, raise chickens and bees, and put together boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables for Alameda Point Collaborative residents. Garden plots are available to anybody on a first-come, first-served basis. Herbs, strawberries, and ground cover dot the landscape around and in between the beds. Every few months, manager Kate Casale holds a garden party for community garden volunteers to weed the area, amend soil, and share a picnic lunch. It's a good time to pump the Growing Youth Project kids for tips on how to make the most of each space.
