There are beer drinkers, and then there are beer connoisseurs. To the connoisseur, a beer isn’t just a frothy delicious liquid that intoxicates, it’s art — a medium where gravity, color, bitterness, alcohol content, malts, and a plethora of other ingredients meld into a unique flavor with a distinct effect. Microbreweries are becoming increasingly popular with their unique take on the many different templates for ale: Indian Pale Ale, Stout, Porters, Wheat, and Pale Ales to name a few. But the greatest asset that comes with a microbrewery is the ability to be adventurous while mastering the fundamentals. Enter Triple Rock Brewery. The Berkeley-based brew house offers an array of exceptionally crafted ales; of particular deliciousness are its dark ales — the Black Rock Porter and Stonehenge Stout — each meaty thick in gravity and smoking in taste. But it’s the seasonal brews that really give the place its creative brand, like the White Chocolate Milk Stout from this past winter, which had the appearance and gravity of a paler ale, yet the marked sweetness of hot cocoa.
