When Alice Waters’ Cafe Fanny closed its doors back in 2012, fans were skeptical of the new coffee and wine bar that would fill its very tiny shoes (really: the restaurant is smaller than some walk-in closets). But Bartavelle is holding its own with its highly Instagrammable — and very tasty — breakfast and lunch offerings, served on beautiful wooden boards. The cafe takes full advantage of its neighbors Acme Bread and Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant: Acme pain au levain is topped with homemade almond cashew butter, prosciutto, or jam, and wines are served by the glass. Whether it’s a superb avocado toast with the “almost hard-boiled” egg with olive oil, salt, and marash pepper, or the after-11 a.m. smoked trout with beautifully arranged pickles, bread, and dips, Bartavelle will make you want every meal on a board.
