Best Beignets

Who would have thought that Vietnam immigrants would open a shop in Oakland and make some of the best fried dough around? New Orleans-style and French-influenced beignets at that, made popular here in the states by Café du Monde in New Orleans. The café's name, Powderface, plays on the fact that eating good beignets can be quite messy. Located in the Fruitvale Transit Village, owners Michael (who lived in New Orleans) and Lauren Tran opened shop in 2004. Although several fancy Bay Area restaurants now serve beignets as desserts, this is one of the few places in the Bay Area that specializes in it. Beyond its specialty, Powderface is a regular cafe serving expresso drinks, sandwiches, and smoothies, mostly to folks in transit to and from BART. Nowadays, people make the trek just to get their Powderface fix. The beignets are made fresh to order and come in powdered sugar or cinnamon flavors. Chocolate and caramel is also available for dipping the beignets, at an extra $.95. Beignets are $3.50 for an order of four, or $12.95 for sixteen.
