.Best Apple Turnovers

Neldham's Danish Bakery

When the hankering for an apple turnover hits you — admit it, it happens! — Neldham’s is the place to go. This eighty-year-old-plus-but-endangered East Bay institution turns out flaky, buttery, apple-filled pastries that you’ve never seen the likes of before. They’re huge and hefty, two-handed beauties that explode with flakes flying when you take a bite. These are too messy to eat like an ordinary sweet treat in the car. Don’t try it, unless you don’t mind bits and pieces of residuals in your lap, the carpet, and the gear shift. Sugar dusted, oozing apple filling, and thick with buttery-buttery goodness, these turnovers are the bomb. Delicious, lovely to look at, and even better to eat. Better hurry to the Telegraph location, because its days are numbered. Word is Neldham’s will be up and running in Pinole and other East Bay locations, so the turnovers will still be available, but not in the quirky storefront with the door that sticks.
