The intersection at College Avenue and Bancroft Way is most notably home to Caffe Strada. Just spitting distance from campus, it’s the epicenter of caffeine-fueled conversation. But, until recently, there was something missing from this corner — namely, Freehouse, a chic-yet-understated venue for a different kind of social lubricant: booze. With a full liquor selection, friendly bartenders, and tasty food, Freehouse is easily the best new addition to the UC Berkeley drunkosphere, providing a place for both enthused undergrads and other members of the campus community to unwind, chat it up, and get a little rowdy. Comfortably occupying the old space of Adagia, Freehouse has the charm of a dimly lit downtown joint far from the usual orbit of inebriated college kids. Its cocktails are affordable, its selection of local beers ample, and its basket of French fries always hits the spot for early-evening munchies. It’s everything you could want from a college bar.
