Berkeley's Ann's Kitchen to Become 'Bleecker Street Bistro'

Jason Kwon, chef-owner of Berkeley’s Joshu-ya Brasserie, has taken over Ann’s Kitchen (2498 Telegraph Ave.), the casual breakfast and brunch spot around the corner from his other restaurant.

Kwon said he’s been running Ann’s for about a month now without making any changes, though he did start a new initiative to donate 10 percent of the restaurant’s proceeds to Build Hope International, a Christian nonprofit based in Alameda. Sometime this summer Kwon plans to close Ann’s and reopen the restaurant as the Bleecker Street Bistro.

“Everything is still in the concept stage,” Kwon said, but he noted that the new restaurant will be a casual, “community-based” eatery — not fine dining, like Joshu-ya.

In the meantime, Kwon has started writing a cookbook memoir, which he said will be in the same vein as Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential or David Chang’s Momofuku cookbook, except from the perspective of a small business owner. Working title? F’n Animal in the Kitchen.

Kwon expects the book to be published around October.
