Berkeley Kite Festival

When: July 25-26, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. 2009
Price: free

These aren't your childhood's kites. The Berkeley Kite Festival, now in its 24th year, elevates kiting to both an art form and a spectator sport, with hand-painted silk flyers, hundred-foot-long airborne animals, and a number of different styles of kite-fighting. This year's festival boasts an octopus kite the length of a football field -- the world's longest -- as well as special guests from the Sode-cho kite-flying society of Hamamatsu, Japan. There's also a giant-creature kite expo, team kite-flying shows, and plenty of kid-friendly activities, including kite-making workshops and candy drops. On Saturday and Sunday, July 25 & 26, at the Berkeley Marina's CesarChavezPark (11 Spinnaker Way, Berkeley). 11-5 p.m., free.
