Bending the Word: Tris Vonna-Michell

When: Sun., Sept. 28, 3 p.m. 2008
Price: free

British artist TrisVonna-Michell is known for "gappiness." At one 2007 performance in Rotterdam he set an egg timer for five minutes and promised to tell a six-act story within that allotment. The result was less a narrative than a fusillade of words; listening was tantamount to watching someone run through a room that's filled with furniture. Vonna-Michell appears Sunday, Sept. 28 at the BerkeleyArt Museum (2626 Bancroft Way, Berkeley), as part of a multimedia series called Bending the Word. Also featuring work by Martha Colburn, Patricia Esquivias, and Olivia Plender, this series is animated by the same ideas that inspire a lot of contemporary philosophy and literary criticism. The artists seek to blur the line between apparent facts and abstract ideas, and show that all narratives are inherently complex and unstable. On paper, that sounds daunting; on stage, it's dazzling. 3 p.m.
