Ben Harper

When: Thu., Aug. 25, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $40-$60

Like a shark, Ben Harper apparently subscribes to the notion of staying in constant motion as a means of survival. Between last year's Dhani Harrison/Joseph Arthur collaboration (aka  Fistful of Mercy) and Give Till It's Gone, his recently released eleventh studio album, Harper has continued creating music even after filing for divorce in October from Laura Dern. Not surprisingly, this breakup has provided plenty of grist for these eleven new songs. Whether he's singing Like a parachute hanging from a wire, I have no idea how we got here over the cacophonous noise-rock of "Clearly Severely," or whispering Silence is the hammer of betrayal on the moody Jackson Browne duet "Pray That Our Love Sees the Dawn," Harper isn't shy about seeking musical catharsis. But it's not all gloom and doom as the Claremont native bounces from Hendrix-worthy guitar work to the Neil Young-inspired "Rock 'N' Roll Is Free." But if you really want to access the inner world of this notoriously private rock star, hit The Warfield Theatre (982 Market St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Aug. 25. 8 p.m., $40-$60.
