Born to a laundress and raised in pre-Civil Rights-era Berkeley, Belva Davis eventually became the first black TV newswoman on the West Coast. Along the way, she experienced innumerable successes in a world -- and a profession -- that was wary to let her in. It's a story she tells in her new memoir, Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman's Life in Journalism, which she discusses at the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay (1414 Walnut St., Berkeley) on Thursday, May 17. 7:30 p.m., $8-$10. 510-848-0237 or JCCEastBay.org
