Drama, Musical, Romance
Christophe Honoré’s curious French tragic romance seeks to revive the Jacques-Demy-style musical, with iffy results. The songs (by Alex Beaupain) are okay, the performances mostly apt, but the story, structure, and dialogue deflate whatever fizzy sexiness the actors try to inject. Honoré’s screenplay traces the live and loves of a mother and daughter from 1964 to 2007, with flashes of real fire from Catherine Deneuve, Ludivine Sagnier, Rasha Bukvic, and Louis Garrel. Chiara Mastroianni, Paul Schneider, and director-turned-actor Milos Forman fare less well. Lingering questions: What’s all this plot-device business about the Sagnier/Deneuve character’s shoes? Does Honoré (Love Songs, In Paris) have a foot fetish? (135 min.)
