Biography, Docudrama, Historical drama
Gorgeous cinematography alone cannot rescue Dominik Graf’s lit-history chronicle of the real-life love triangle of poet Friedrich Schiller (Florian Stetter) and a pair of beautiful, cash-strapped aristocratic sisters (Hannah Herzsprung, Henriette Confurius) in 18th-century Germany. Part One is vivid and exhilarating with its portrait of the times (the French Revolution, the rise of intellectual and social freedom, etc.) and the sisters’ headstrong amorous adventures. Part Two has more in common with a soap opera. The interiors and dramatic exteriors in the wilds of Thuringia are magnificent, the acting without fault, but we’d really rather know more about Schiller than just the drawing-room scandal the threesome provokes. Their mad passion is never quite mad enough. Written and directed by Graf, originally as a TV mini-series (179 min.).
