Beloved Oakland

Oakland’s economic boom has been a recipe for displacement of communities of color, and ironically, many of the things used as selling points to attract new affluent residents and investment — Oakland’s radical history of cultural creativity and political resistance — have become weaponized against the city’s working class. But according to the organizers of “Beloved Oakland,” an evening of music, art, and politics, this new Oakland doesn’t have to be the enemy of the Black and Brown folks who built The Town. Featuring musicians Fantastic Negrito and Jennifer Johns, poet Ise Lyfe, and activist Alicia Garza, among many others, Beloved Oakland is designed as an enlightening evening to welcome what’s new in the city while simultaneously figuring out ways to reverse gentrification and displacement. It’s an invitation for two very different worlds to collide in a beneficial way. Proceeds from the event go toward projects focused on housing rights, homelessness, and economic justice, and also a campaign to create a Black Culture Zone in East Oakland.
