Belle Monroe & Her Brewglass Boys

When: Fri., April 17, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $18.50-$19.50

Despite their punny name, Belle Monroe and Her BrewglassBoys have been a mainstay on the local bluegrass scene for the last seven years. Monroe, aka Pam Brandon, was a well-known folk, blues, and swing singer when she hooked up with mandolin player Ted Silverman and bassist Tom Dorhan to form the core of the band. Rounded out by Jordan Klein on banjo, fiddler Diana Greenberg, and Dobro player Rick Hendricks, the band never turns in a performance that's less than incendiary. Belle's forceful vocals are full of high lonesome sincerity, and the music, a blend of traditional favorites and unexpected choices like Dylan's "It Take a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry," will keep you guessin' while you're sweatin'. Belle Monroe and Her BrewglassBoys play the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley) on Friday, Apr. 17. 8 p.m., $18.50, $19.50. FreightandSalvage.org
