Comedy drama
Nick, a struggling young man working at a homeless shelter (Paul Dano) runs into a problem client — his estranged father (Robert De Niro), a delusionary, alcoholic street person. The ensuing soul searching, with flashbacks, provides a genuine actors’ picnic, with De Niro latching onto the meatiest character he’s had since Everybody’s Fine, and Dano cementing his credentials as one the most intense young actors in Hollywood. The story is adapted by writer-director Paul Weitz (About a Boy, Little Fockers) from author Nick Flynn’s memoir, and costars Olivia Thirlby (too glamorous as a shelter aide), Julianne Moore (Nick’s mother), and action stalwart Wes Studi, cast against type as a nice guy. But it’s Dano and De Niro who provide the fireworks. (102 min.)
