Comedy drama, Romance
Once was enough. Twice is pushing it. As in writer-director John Carney’s hit 2006 musical romance Once, a pair of star-crossed urban dwellers is united by love songs. This time the scene is New York City and those to be mated are Greta, a folkish singer-songwriter (Keira Knightley), and Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a music-biz exec on a downward spiral. Aggressive harmlessness reigns. Their tryst is by-the-numbers and the songs are unremarkable huggy ditties. We see our path through it immediately and are unimpressed, despite the best efforts of Ruffalo and Knightley. They’re stuck in a zenith of namby-pambyness and can do nothing. Costarring Hailee Steinfeld, Mos Def, Catherine Keener, and real-life pop singer Adam Levine (104 min.).
