Even though it’s being sold by Merchant Ivory as a cross-cultural bodice-ripper, this story of the adulterous love affair between an English plantation owner (Linus Roache) and his housemaid (Nandita Das) in Southern India in the 1930s develops into a thoughtful political drama centered on the Englishman’s Indian foreman (Rahul Bose) -– caught between village wrath and his loyalty to his boss. It’s the first English-language film by director Santosh Sivan, who made The Terrorist (1999). Somehow he makes it both pretty and gritty. Screenplay by Cathy Rabin. Costarring Jennifer Ehle and John Standing (98 min.).
